• AllTheWeb -- Crawls as many web pages as leader Google.  Nice Interface. 
• AltaVista  [search strategies] [more about] -- Has many unique search features and uses the Yahoo! database. 
• Google  [search strategies] [more about] -- Largest and most popular search engine. 
• HotBot  [search strategies] [more about]-- Can search either Google, Yahoo!/Inktomi, or Teoma (Ask Jeeves), but not all at the same time. 
• Yahoo!  [search strategies] -- More widely known as a directory, Yahoo! also performs web searches.

Meta Search Engines

• ez2Find -- Results nicely broken up into Guides, Web Sites, Summary, and Clustered Results.
• KartOO  [search strategies] -- Uses an interesting and unusual clustering/mapping layout of results.
• SurfWax  [search strategies] [more about] -- Sponsored Links kept in separate frame.  Has unique Snap feature.
• Vivisimo [more about]  -- Nice presentation.  Clustered Results feature provided in separate frame.
• WebCrawler [more about] -- One of many meta search engines powered by InfoSpace.  Must be careful since sponsored results not distinguished from the rest.

Directories

• About  [more about] -- Directory which also includes articles on various subjects.  More commercial in nature than many of the other directories.
• Alexa  [more about] -- Owned by Amazon.com, this is an Enhanced Directory of the Open Directory Project.  Provides listings of "most popular" Web sites.
• BUBL LINK / 5:15 -- Academic in nature.  Can browse by subject, by Dewey Decimal Classification, by country, and by type of resource.
• Digital Librarian  --  A directory maintained by Margaret Vail Anderson, a librarian from Cortland, New York
• INFOMINE  [more about]  -- A searchable directory of scholarly internet resources.
• The Internet Public Library  [more about] -- One of the earliest Internet directories to develop. Sponsored by the University of Michigan.
• Librarians' Index to the Internet  [more about]  -- Another directory created early on.  Sponsored by the California State Library.
• Looksmart [more about] -- Directory used by such companies as AltaVista, Excite, and MSN.
• Open Directory Project  [more about] -- The largest directory of the Internet.  Directory used by such companies as HotBot, Lycos, and Netscape.
• The WWW Virtual Library  -- Subjects in this directory are maintained by subject experts (often by companies) and hosted on other servers.
